The story “The Last
Asset”, by Edith Wharton is about a mother by the name of Mrs. Newell who is
trying to marry her daughter off Hermione. In doing so, Mrs. Newell portrays an
evil, self centered personality. She wants to marry off her daughter not
because she wants her to be in a happy union with someone, but because she
feels that with this marriage she can live comfortably off of the benefits that
come with it, which are wealth and a higher social stands. It is also a bit of insecurity
that Mrs. Newell feels like she needs to use her daughter to get a better
living. Instead of trying figure out ways to achieve these goals herself, she’s
trying to take the easy way by using her daughter.
