One character that struck out the most to me was Ezinma , one of Okonkwo children’s with his wife Ekwefi. Being that Ekwefi lost many of her children with Okonkwo, Ezinma is very special to her. They have a very unique mother relationship, to the extent that she calls her mother by her first name, “She called her by her name Ekwefi” (Achebe 76).She even let her daughter get eggs in the bedroom when her father specific told her not to and even threatens to beat her if she did. Ekwefi suffered a lot throughout her adult life. She gave birth to ten children and out of those ten only nine died, “The birth of her children, which should be a woman crowning glory, became for Ekwefi mere physical agony devoid of promise” (77). Being that Ekwefi is in a polygamist marriages it was hard to see the other wives with healthy children and hers weren’t living for too long. I also think that she was a little jealous because she probably felt in competition with the other wives. I guess that is why Ezinma is so special because she lived way longer than any of her brother or sisters.

The story “The Last Asset”, by Edith Wharton is about a mother by the name of Mrs. Newell who is trying to marry her daughter off Hermione. In doing so, Mrs. Newell portrays an evil, self centered personality. She wants to marry off her daughter not because she wants her to be in a happy union with someone, but because she feels that with this marriage she can live comfortably off of the benefits that come with it, which are wealth and a higher social stands. It is also a bit of insecurity that Mrs. Newell feels like she needs to use her daughter to get a better living. Instead of trying figure out ways to achieve these goals herself, she’s trying to take the easy way by using her daughter.
